The Planning and Transport Department is responsible for the preparation, implementation
and review of the Development Plans and planning policies for Swindon and working with other organisations
to this end. In Swindon Borough the Development Plan consists of:

Borough Council works jointly with Wiltshire Council on the preparation of minerals
and waste planning policy documents.
Under revised planning regulations the Swindon Borough Local Plan will be replaced
by the Swindon Borough Local Development Framework consisting of:
The Forward Planning Group also assists
the South West Regional Assembly in the preparation of the Regional
Spatial Strategy (RSS). The current RSS was published by the Government Office for the South
West in 2001 as RPG10, and contains policies up to 2016. RSS is being reviewed to carry it forward to
2026.

Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment
The final report for the Swindon Strategic Housing Land Availability Assessment
(SHLAA) 2008 has been completed. The assesment identifies potential housing capacity sites and assesses
whether such sites are deliverable or developable for housing. The SHLAA will form a technical evidence
base within the Local Development Framework and inform the Submission Draft of the Swindon Core Strategy
and the development of the Site Allocations Development Plan Document.

West of Swindon Study Update
The Draft South West Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS) is promoting the allocation
of 3,000 homes to be located to the west of Swindon within North Wiltshire. Wiltshire Council and Swindon
Borough Council have worked jointly to assess the most appropriate location for these homes should the
allocation within the RSS be adopted.
